Senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar took charge as the new Commissioner of Delhi Police on Friday. A 1994-batch IPS officer, Kumar was serving as the Special Director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) before being entrusted with the top post in Delhi Police. He took over after Satish Golcha was removed from the post of Delhi Police Commissioner before his scheduled retirement.
The Ministry of Home Affairs said in its order that Anurag Kumar's appointment has been approved by the competent authority. According to an official notification, he will assume charge as Delhi Police Commissioner from the date he takes over the office and will continue in the post until further orders.
Satish Golcha relieved before tenure ends
The MHA order also stated that incumbent Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, a 1992-batch AGMUT cadre IPS officer, will report to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi for his next posting after Anurag Kumar formally assumes charge.
According to available information, Golcha's tenure as Delhi Police Commissioner was scheduled to continue until 2027. However, he has now been relieved of the post ahead of the completion of his term.
Who is Anurag Kumar?
Anurag Kumar is regarded as one of the senior officers with extensive experience in both policing and intelligence. Before his stint in the Intelligence Bureau (IB), he served as Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in several districts of the Delhi Police, handling key law and order responsibilities in the national capital. A Bachelor of Engineering graduate, Kumar later moved to the Intelligence Bureau, where he held several important assignments related to internal security and intelligence operations.
His service has been recognised with the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2010 and the prestigious President's Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2016. Known for his expertise in strategic planning and high-level security matters, Kumar's appointment as Delhi Police Commissioner is being seen as part of a wider administrative reshuffle.
Delhi Police witnessed major reshuffle earlier this year
The latest appointment comes months after the Delhi Police underwent a major administrative reshuffle on March 3. In one of the biggest transfers in recent years, 70 officers, including 50 IPS officers and 20 DANIPS officers, were shifted to new postings with immediate effect after approval from the Lieutenant Governor.
The exercise covered appointments and transfers across several senior ranks, including Special Commissioners, Joint Commissioners, Additional Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs). The reshuffle impacted key wings such as district policing, crime, traffic, security and other specialised units.
