New Delhi: Samsung has launched a new phablet called the Galaxy Note Edge which comes with a bendable OLED display. The Galaxy Note Edge has a screen that curves around the phone on the right hand side and displays notifications like a 'ticker.'

The curved touchscreen provides quick access to frequently used apps, alerts, sports scores or trending items on Twitter, even while watching a movie on the main screen. The “Edge Screen” works even when the main screen is turned off so you can quickly glance information by swiping the edge. When the phone is unlocked, it will showcase a number of shortcuts, including a timer, torch and a ruler. You can also customize the wallpaper for the edge, selecting from any photo and a series of filters.

Notably, the company will release an API for the edge display, so apps can use the screen in clever ways.

The Note Edge has the same metallic design as the new Note 4 and has the same soft-touch back without the fake stitching.

The phablet comes with a Quad HD, 2560 x 1440 display like the Note 4, though this one is slightly smaller at 5.6 inches rather than 5.7. It features a 160-pixel curved edge.

The other specifications of Edge are identical to the Note 4. The Note Edge comes in two variants, one with a 2.7 GHz quad-core one and another with an 1.9 GHz Octa-core processor. The quad-core one has a Snapdragon 805 chipset, which brings LTE Cat 6 support and the Octa-core processor has Samsung's Exynos 5433 chipset and LTE Cat 4 connectivity.

The device offers 3GB of RAM, and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage, with the capability to expand via microSD card.

The handset also comes with the reworked S Pen found on the Galaxy Note 4. The Edge offers optical image stabilization (OIS) for the camera and a fingerprint reader in the home button. However, it won't be compatible with the Gear VR virtual-reality headset right out of the gate; that's Note 4-only.

The device runs Google's Android 4.4 Kitkat mobile operating system, a 16MP rear-facing camera, and a 3,000mAh battery.

The Galaxy Note Edge is expected to launch before the end of the year, but Samsung has not announced pricing and release date details yet.

After launching lots of flagship smartphones, the South Korean handset maker has finally revealed a product that looks like a genuine innovation. The new curved screen is cool and can be pretty useful to people who use the device for the occasional calls, tweets and emails.
