New Delhi: HTC has unveiled the Desire 820, the first Android smartphone to be powered by an octa-core 64-bit processor.

The HTC Desire 820 is a sizeable upgrade to the Desire 816 as it runs on a 64-bit chipset, replacing the Snapdragon 600 with the octa-core Snapdragon 615 from Qualcomm.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 is an octa-core chipset that consists of cores clocked at 1.5 GHz and 1.0 GHz and has 64-bit architecture.

The Desire 820 sports the same 5.5 inch 720p display as the 816 but offers more more RAM storage. It comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The device has the same 13 MP rear camera though, but the front camera is an upgraded 8 MP.

Perhaps the most striking element of the Desire 820 is its design. The plastic handset has a two-tone body thanks to a new ‘Double Shot Technique' moulding method. It comes in a variety of colours, including red, blue, pink, black and white. It is 7.74mm thick and 155g in weight.

Featuring a 5.5-inch HD display the Desire 820 adds a 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera with low light capabiliites.

Running Android 4.4 KitKat, the Desire 820 is guaranteed an Android L update and is skinned with HTC's Sense 6 UI. It features the BlinkFeed interface and packs BoomSound stereo speakers on the front.

“We are going to start shipping the Desire 820 later this month' the company confirmed. There is currently no word on the phone's pricing.

The Desire 820 also features HTC's BoomSound technology with its two front facing speakers. HTC has also announced its Dot View cases for this smartphone and will start shipping the device later this month.

With the integrated 2600mAh battery, HTC notes that the device will be able to deliver up to 22.4 hours of talktime or around 424 hours of standby on 3G.
