Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) candidate Jyoti Manjhi, contesting from the Barachatti constituency in Gaya, was attacked during an election campaign on Wednesday. Jyoti Devi, whose daughter is married to Jitan Ram Manjhi's son, was injured when her campaign convoy came under stone-pelting during the second phase of the Bihar Assembly elections. Reports say she suffered head injuries in the attack. Police have reached the spot, and more details are awaited.
Men on motorcycle threw stones at Jyoti
According to reports, the incident took place while HAM candidate Jyoti Manjhi was conducting a roadshow near Sulebhatta Mod as part of her election campaign. During the event, two men on a motorcycle allegedly threw stones at her, one of which hit Jyoti Manjhi on the head.
Following the attack, she was immediately taken to a local hospital in her vehicle and is currently undergoing treatment at the Community Health Centre in Barachatti.
Notably, this is not the first attack on her campaign. Earlier, her campaign vehicle was targeted twice once in Kharanti village under the Magadh University police station area, where posters on her campaign vehicle were torn by unidentified miscreants, and again in Dema village under Mohanpur police station, where bike-borne youths entered her convoy shouting “Jyoti Manjhi murdabaad” and “Long live RJD” slogans during her outreach programme.
Bihar elections 2025
The HAM (Secular) was allocated six seats according to the seat-sharing formula that formulated by the ruling alliance.
Jitan Ram Manjhi said he was 'upset' after his party was allocated just six seats for the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar, but stressed that he won't oppose the decision of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
Speaking to news agency ANI, Manjhi also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, stating that he would continue working to strengthen the ruling alliance at the Centre and in Bihar. He also said that the NDA, which also includes the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal-United (JD-U), will return to power in Bihar.
"We thank PM Modi for this. Good work is being done in Bihar. On seat-sharing, we stand with the leadership and we support this decision. We will work to strengthen the NDA. NDA is going to form its government in Bihar," Manjhi, a former Bihar CM, said. "We demanded 15 seats but we were given only six seats. We are upset, but we will not oppose the NDA's decision. We will move forward with whatever we have got, and we thank PM Modi for this."
The polling for the two-phase Bihar assembly elections will take place on November 6 and 11. The counting of votes will take place on November 14.
