WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is calling for an urgent halt to the civil war in Yemen and the start of negotiations toward a political settlement.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo (pahm-PAY'-oh) issued the call in a statement asking all parties to support U.N. Special Envoy Martin Griffiths in what Pompeo says must be "substantive consultations" in November in a third country. Sweden's foreign minister says Griffiths has asked Sweden to host such talks.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, in separate remarks Tuesday evening, called for a cease-fire within 30 days.

The administration's renewed call for a political solution in Yemen comes amid growing criticism of its support for Saudi Arabia's Yemen air campaign in the aftermath of the killing of Saudi writer Jamal Khashoggi (jah-MAHL' khahr-SHOHK'-jee) in the Saudi Consulate in Turkey.
