Google introduces Gmail ID change feature without losing emails: Details
Google has introduced a new feature that allows users to change their Gmail address without losing emails. The company is also expanding AI capabilities in Gmail with a new “AI Inbox” powered by Gemini to improve email management.

Google has started rolling out a new feature which will enable users to change their Gmail address without messing around with a new account. So if you have an email ID which is outdated, or we may say it looks embarrassing, then you can change it for something better (improved)—and all your emails, contacts and account information will be the same, without any change.
Sundar Pichai has confirmed it himself: no more being stuck with an old email address you made years ago.
How to update your Gmail address?
You can change your email right in your Google Account settings. All you need to do is follow the steps below:
- Head to the settings page
- Pick a new Gmail address that is available
- Make the changes
It is that simple process, where you do not need to set up a new account or manually transfer emails.
That being said, Google is rolling out this feature slowly, so only some people can use it at the moment.
What will happen to your old email address?
Your old Gmail address will stay linked to your account, and no one will be able to take it later, so you are safe and covered. Also, any emails sent to your old or new address still show up in your inbox. There is no risk of missing messages while you make the switch.
Google has added AI-powered Inbox tools
Along with the Gmail update, Google is further launching some AI-powered features which will help in managing your inbox. The new ‘AI Inbox’ will be using Gemini to organise your emails better.
Now, important messages—like bill payments—pop up under ‘suggested to-dos’ with clear due dates, so you do not miss anything urgent. There is also a “topics to catch up on” feature, which groups updates like travel bookings and reservations together, making it easier to keep track.
Availability and roll-out plans
Currently, AI Inbox is only available to certain US users at the time of writing. The Gemini-powered email summarisation is live in some regions, too. Google has been reportedly planning to roll these features out to more people across the world in the coming months (timeline unspecified).
