Bogota, Dec 29: The Colombian football federation says it has opened negotiations with former Argentina coach Jose Pekerman to take charge of the national side.

Federation president Luis Bedoya says talks with Pekerman are at a "preliminary phase."

Colombia turned to the 62-year-old Argentine, who took his country to the quarterfinals of the 2006 World Cup, after former Paraguay coach Gerardo Martino turned down the job for the second time in four months.

Colombia fired coach Leonel Alvarez earlier this month after three World Cup qualifying matches yielded just four points. Alvarez had taken over from Hernan Dario Gomez, who resigned after reports he hit a woman outside a Bogota bar in August.

Colombia's next World Cup qualifying matches are in June.
