Delhi Capitals, who finished as runners-up in the previous edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), revealed their list of retained players for the impending IPL 2021 auction which will take place next month. The franchise retained 19 players which include six overseas and released six players which included big names like Sandeep Lamichhane and Jason Roy.

The release of England opener Roy was down to the presence of two Indian opening options at their disposal - Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan - along with two other options - Marcus Stoinis and Ajinkya Rahane. In 2019, he only played five matches where he scored an unbeaten 91 and pulled out of the 2020 season with a side strain. He was replaced by Daniel Sams.

Meanwhile, the lack of available slots in the XI left Lamichhane on the bench for the entire 2020 season while Mohit Sharma only managed to appear in one match. Alex Carey too has been released owing to the presence of a back-up keeping option in Shimron Hetmyer who had taken up the role when Rishabh Pant had incurred an injury midway through last season.

Delhi had finished second in the league with eight wins in 14 games, finishing behind eventual champions Mumbai Indians, whom they lost to in the final.
