New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has hinted that she has no objection if all the political parties want to change rules regarding appointment of Leader of Opposition in the Lower House.

Speaking to media on the sideline of an event in Madhya Pradesh's Khargone district on Thursday, the Speaker reiterated that she had acted according to rules but she would consider amending the rules for the same if political parties agree for a consensus on the contentious issue.

Mahajan had earlier rejected the Congress' demand for the post of Leader of Opposition status in the Lower House citing rulings and precedents from 1980 and 1984, when the party was in power and there was no official LoP.

The rules of the House specify that a party is eligible for the post only if it has at least 55 seats (10 per cent) in the Lower House. The Congress has 44 MPs in the Lok Sabha.
