New Delhi: Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said that the hanging of Afzal Guru was both “wrong” and “badly handled”. He said that, his family should have been warned and given a chance to meet him for the last time and his body should have been returned to his family.
Tharoor made the statements after five Congress legislators from Jammu and Kashmir revealed that his execution was a mistake.
Notably the Congress party was in power at that time and such remarks could be embarrassing for the party that had constantly defended Afzal Guru's execution.
Guru was held guilty of plotting the 2003 terror attack on the Parliament and was hanged at Delhi's Tihar jail on February 9, 2013, after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy petition. He was then buried within the jail premises and the news had come out hours after his hanging.
Hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel patrolled the Kashmir Valley on Monday, after separatists called a strike to protest the execution of Guru.
