It was the first time after the holocaust of 1947 that Sikh identity became an invitation to death.

But with the nation's focus riveted on Indira Gandhi's assassination per se, no one seemed to really know the extent and depth of the mounting violence against Sikhs.

It was not the age of technology. Most journalists in most media houses were busy with political stories. But everyone knew something was gravely wrong.
