India's first hydrogen-powered train set for July 17 launch with multi-layer safety systems | IN PICS

In what will be a major milestone for the Indian Railways, India's first hydrogen train will be flagged off by PM Modi on Friday, which will operate between the Jind and Sonipat railway stations. With this, India would join a select group of countries that have operational hydrogen-powered trains.

India's first hydrogen train will run between Jind and Sonipat. It will connect Jind Junction, Gohana Junction and Sonipat.

The route has been selected to demonstrate the operational viability, safety and reliability of hydrogen-powered passenger train services under regular operating conditions.

The railways is also exploring the deployment of hydrogen technology on heritage railways, including the Kalka-Shimla route.

The train will be flagged off by PM Modi on Friday (July 17).

The train is equipped with multi-layer safety systems capable of detecting hydrogen leaks, heat, flames and smoke.

As electricity is generated on board through clean-hydrogen technology, the train represents the greenest form of rail propulsion, powering the future of sustainable mobility.

The 10-coach train will have a capacity of around 2,600 passengers.

The train and the plant are fitted with devices that continuously watch for hydrogen leaks, unusual heat, flames or smoke.

There is also an automatic shut-off system in the train.

The train will have an operational speed of 75 kmph and a design speed of 110 kmph.
