Riyadh, Dec 3: The official Saudi news agency says the aging kingdom's ruler will undergo a second back surgery in New York City.

The 86-year-old King Abdullah flew to New York for medical treatment on Nov. 22, after what the palace said was a slipped disc and a blood clot pressing on the nerves in his back.

The first surgery at the Presbyterian Hospital extracted the clot and corrected the disc. Days later, Saudi officials said Abdullah was walking again and that the operation had been successful.

Saudi Press Agency says surgeons will "stabilize a number of vertebras" on Friday afternoon.

Before he left for the United States, Abdullah temporarily handed control of the kingdom to Crown Prince Sultan, his 85-year-old half brother. AP
