New Delhi: Two days ahead of the United Nations Climate Summit, where more than 120 world leaders will convene for a meeting aimed at galvanising political will for a new global climate treaty by the end of 2015, thousands of people gathered in New York to take part in an international initiative to raise awareness about the dangers global warming.

Preliminary estimates given by organisers said that 3,10,000 people showed up for the peaceful march, making it one of the largest protests ever held in the Big Apple and certainly the largest in history on the topic of climate change.

The march began in a corner of Central Park and, after participants wended their way along New York streets for three hours, ended in the western part of the city.

Organisers said that another 2,70,000 people participated in related events outside New York City.
