Texas, US: Grand Saline is an unusual town of Texas, sitting on top of a massive lode of natural salt, estimated at 16,000 feet deep. Civil War era saltworks were used by the Confederates, and the salt industry has never left. The Grand Saline salt dome is estimated to last for another 20,000 years.The Salt Palace Museum here is lickable . This off-the-beaten-path tourist attraction has had its exterior taste-tested for more than 80 years, encouraging visitors to take a try at it. It's the only edible salt building of its kind in North America.It is a small one-story building . It is constructed of local salt blocks. It has been rebuilt on the same site at least three times. The most recent Salt Palace was built in 1993, replacing one built in 1975, which replaced one built in 1960, which replaced the original Salt Palace built for the 1936 Texas Centennial. It has a new patio for picnics and beautiful arbor front side. In 1995 a small museum was created inside it. which boasts a huge piece of salt weighing between 2 and 3 tons.Guests can explore the small museum with displays dating back to 1845, including salt mining equipment, photos, and videos of the mine operating at 750 feet below ground. The museum is free; visitors to the Salt Palace will also receive a salt crystal free of charge.Grand Saline also organizes an annual Salt Festival every year in the month of June 9, which kicks off with a parade, pet shows, car shows, a rodeo, and a street dance in the middle of town and attracts many tourists.
