Lucknow: Lucknow police has launched a massive campaign to remove red and blue beacons used in an unauthorised manner by people on their vehicles following a Supreme Court ruling. So far, red and blue beacons

Says Navneet Sikera, DIG Lucknow Range: "UP has 402 MLAs and mostly small and big time leaders sport red beacons on their vehicles. After the Supreme Court ruling, a campaign has been launched against beacon-fitted vehicles."

Sikera said, a committee consisting of Additional DGP (Traffic), Trade Tax commisioner, and Transport commissioner has been formed to submit a report within 15 days to stop misuse of red beacons.

Rules on use of red, blue and yellow beacons across India are very clear:

-- Only the President, Vice President, Governor, Lt Governor, Chief Justice of India, former Chief Justice of India, judges of Supreme Court, chief justice and sitting judges of High Courts are allowed used of red beacon with revolving flasher.

-- Among people's representatives the Prime Minister, deputy Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, former prime ministers, Lok Sabha Speaker, Leaders of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and cabinet ministers can use red beacons with flasher. Cabinet ministers in states can also use red beacons with flashers but only within the boundaries of their states. Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission can also use red beacon with flasher.

-- Red becaons WITHOUT flashers can be used by Chief of Amy Staff, Chief Election Commissioner, Comptroller and Auditor General, deputy chairpersons of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, ministers of state and deputy ministers at the Centre, Planning Commission members, Cabinet Secretary, Central Board of Direct Taxes chairman, chief commissioner of Income Tax, UPSC chairman, deputy chief ministers of states and SC/ST Commission chairman. In addition, ministers of state in state governments and chief secretary of states are permitted to use red beacon without flasher within their states.

-- The third level of VIP cars with yellow beacons are used by civil court judges, SPs and DMs in districts.

-- Ambulances, police vehicles, quick response teams, even private security vehicles for patrolling  are allowed use of blue beacons for specific emergency purposes.
