Dehradun: The Uttarakhand High Court on Wednesday directed IIT Roorkee to allow all 73 expelled students to appear in the ongoing semester exams.

The latest order came as a huge relief for all first year B.Tech programme student who were expelled on account of poor performance.

The single-judge bench of Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia also asked the institution's administration to file its counter-affidavit before July 21 when the case has been scheduled for next hearing, counsel for the students Arvind Vashisth said.

On June 15, IIT Roorkee had expelled 73 students saying academic performance was not up to the mark as they scored less than 5 CGPA (cumulative grade point average) in their exams.

In July, the students had filed a mercy petition for re-admission which was rejected by the institute.

The institute also said that at the time of admission, the parents of these students had signed a declaration stating that their poor performance could result in their removal from the institute.

In past, students have been expelled from IITs but taken back, except in one instance each in IIT, Kharagpur and IIT, Kanpur.

In 2006, around 15-20 first year students of IIT, Kharagpur were expelled for poor performance but this decision was, however, overturned by the director.
