New Delhi: Senior IPS officer Surender Singh took over as the new director general of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on Friday.

Singh, a 1980-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the West Bengal cadre, was serving as a special director in the Intelligence Bureau (IB) before taking up his new assignment as CISF chief.

He succeeds Arvind Ranjan, a 1977-batch IPS officer of Kerala cadre who retired on Thursday.

Singh, who is the 25th director general of CISF, will remain in office till August 2016.

He joined the IPS at the age of 24 and was allotted West Bengal cadre.

In his 35-year career, Singh has held many important and sensitive positions in West Bengal and has been on central deputation.

During 1981-87, Singh served in various capacities in West Bengal and as commandant of an armed police battalion in Rajasthan.

In 1987, he joined the IB on central deputation and served in Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. He has also served as first secretary in the Indian High Commission in Dhaka (Bangladesh).

On July 31, 2014, he was promoted to the rank of special director in IB and continued to look after various important assignments.
