New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday morning visited Rajghat and paid homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 145th birth anniversary.
The Prime Minister spent a few minutes at the memorial.
“Gandhi ji's thoughts & beliefs remain a great inspiration for us. Let us dedicate ourselves to building the India of Gandhi ji's dreams,” he said in a twitter post.
“I bow to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary,” he added.
Speaker Sumitra Mahajan, Umion Minister VK Singh, Venkaiah Naidu, Harsh Vardhan accompanied him.
Modi will formally kick start the ambitious ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' here aiming at creating a 'Clean India' in the next five years. He would symbolically wield a broom and reach out to all Indians to make cleanliness a mass movement.
Former PM Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit also paid floral tributes at Rajghat.
A minute's silence was observed at the black stone memorial by all the leaders.
The birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi is celebrated as Gandhi Jayanti across the country. It is also marked as the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi, born this day in 1869 at Porbandar in Gujarat, played a key role in India's independence struggle. He was assassinated January 30, 1948.
He also visited the Vijay Ghat, the samadhi of former prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, and paid rich tribute to him on his 110th birth anniversary.
