Kolkata, March 23: Hundreds of people and NCC cadets came together, holding aloft solar lamps and candles at a silent walk to raise awareness about climate change here yesterday.

"This solar lantern rally is an initiative to raise awareness about climate change and its effects. This drive also highlights the importance of renewable energy resources," state director for World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-India, Saswati Sen told IANS.

Organised by WWF-India in association with Renewable Energy Pvt. Ltd., the initiative is in support of the Earth Hour March 23 from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. across the globe.

Snaking their way from Elliot Park in the city centre to the iconic Victoria Memorial, the cadets were accompanied by students and teachers of around 20 schools of the city.

"We participate in such campaigns because cadets also have a responsibility towards the environment. We try to inculcate whatever we learn in our day to day life," Sudipto Maity, a cadet of 2 BN (Bengal) Air Squadron of NCC, told IANS.

The solar lantern rally culminated in a garbage cleaning drive where the participants were addressed by members of the NGO Garbage Free India.
