New Delhi, May 16: Set to take over as Chief Minister of West Bengal on Friday, Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee today indicated that Congress will join her government in the state.
On her first visit to Delhi after a landslide win in the assembly polls on May 13, the 56-year-old leader met Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and invited them to attend the swearing-in ceremony of her ministry in Kolkata on May 20.
Emerging from the meetings, Banerjee said she had invited Congress to be part of the Trinamool-led government in Bengal.
Asked whether whether Congress had agreed, she said, "Congress will be part of the government. I have invited them and they will let me know."
The Railway Minister also dropped enough hints that her portfolio in the Central government would be retained by her party.
Earlier, West Bengal Governor M KNarayanan today invited Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee to form new government in the state following her party's resounding victory in the Assembly elections.
“A letter from the Governor has been sent to Ms Mamata Banerjee inviting her to form the government,” Raj Bhavan sources told PTI.
The Trinamool Congress yesterday formally staked claim to form the government shortly after electing Banerjee as its Legislature Party leader.
Partha Chatterjee who was elected Deputy Leader of the TC Legislature Party, said that while staking the claim to form the government, a copy of the resolution adopted at the meeting of the newly-elected TC MLAs was submitted to the Governor. A list of 184 party MLAs were also submitted along with the resolution.
Trinamool's ally Congress has also submitted a letter of support to the government to be formed under Banerjee's leadership. PTI
