Kolkata: Irate commuters vandalised railway property at the Sealdah station in protest against late running of local trains in the Sealdah Main section of Eastern Railway last night, further affecting train services for over an hour.

The agitation even spread to adjacent Bidhannagar Road station at one point of time as some passengers, stranded there, started throwing stones at the ticket counter and station manager's office, Eastern Railway sources said.

Trouble began when the running of two EMU locals— Sealdah-Naihati and Sealdah-Gede—was delayed. As the crowd swelled in minutes, agitation began at Sealdah.

A section of the crowd then started damaging railway property at the terminal, prompting police to act.

A senior ER official confirmed “having heard” about RPF lathicharge on the ransacking mob at Sealdah when the situation threatened to spin out of control.

The services could be finally restored after 10:30 pm, but the situation is yet to return to normalcy.
