Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, May 24 : In an effort to revamp the silk industry in Kashmir, the state sericulture department has shifted to bivoltine sericulture technology.
Kathua district alone has achieved the mark of 1.3 lakh kg of cocoon production. Nearly 4,400 families are engaged in cocoon production.
The deputy director of sericulture development office, Kathua, Amanullah Sheikh said on Thursday that more emphasis is now being laid on the quality of cocoons.
Kashmir silk industryonce held a significant position in the world due to its superior quality and lustre but gradually the industry witnessed a sharp decline due to militancy.
With recent initiatives undertaken by the sericulture department and the provincial government, the industry has tried to regain its lost sheen.
India has an overall demand of 48000 metric tones of silk annually. It is the second largest producer and consumer of silk products in the world.
