Jamshedpur: Chief Minister Hemant Soren today said the mineral-rich Jharkhand has plenty of potential for growth but lagged behind because of the prevailing mindset of the people.

“We have no dearth of potential for growth but unfortunately, people expected the government to do everything, which was not possible,” Soren, who was on the two-day visit in the steel city to take part in various programmes including launching of group insurance for journalists to cover accidental benefits, said.

“The people expect us to provide jobs, which the government cannot,” the chief minister admitted while urging the people to avail the benefits of various schemes, launched by the government.

The people can become self-reliant, availing the benefits of such schemes instead of depending on government to provide them jobs, he said.

Hailing some highly educated youths attracted towards agricultural sector, Soren said the state could record rapid progress by adopting modern technology.

We have to ensure that the rural pockets of the state are developed as good as the urban town and cities, with availability of electricity and water at least for 18 to 20 hours, he said.

The development would be incomplete unless we develop our villages, Soren said.

The state has already earned a negative image, which needed to be change, he said, adding that he was ready to change with the time.

Highlighting his achievements during the short stint of one year in power, Soren said we are committed to ensure all round development of the state and continuously taking decisions to achieve the goal.

We have initiated measures to register improvement across sectors including health, education, infrastructure and energy, he said, while expressing satisfaction over his government's performance during last one year in power.

The state government has introduced direct appointment for sportspersons of national, international repute and the family member of those Jharkhandi activists who had sacrificed their lives for separate statehood cause, and primitive tribes; grant to madrasas, appointment of 30,000 teachers, Rs 10 lakh to each panchayat, hike in pension for old and widows, digitalisation of land record, cash award for meritorious students of X and XII STD, he claimed.
