Fire breaks out in Chandigarh-Dibrugarh express

As soon as the driver noticed smoke coming out of the engine, he immedietely pulled the emergency brakes and stopped the train near Chathaat station.

A massive fire broke out in the engine of the Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express on Friday. The incident took place around 11 am near Chathaat in Phansidewa block of Darjeeling district under Siliguri subdivision. 

The Dibrugarh-bound Chandigarh-Dibrugarh Express is a weekly superfast express which connects Chandigarh in the north with Assaam.

As soon as the driver noticed smoke coming out of the engine, he immedietely pulled the emergency brakes and stopped the train near Chathaat station.

Four fire engines from Phansidewa and other near by localities reached the spot after getting the information about the incident and brought the fire under control, However, there is no information about the casualties of any fire recorded. The police of nearby police stations have also reached the spot to investigate the incident.

Fearing blaze, many passengers jumped outof the train. Unconfirmed sources said many passengers were injured in the process. 

“The site where the incident occurred is so remote that there is almost no mobile network there. We have sent our men and are sending further support. We are awaiting the details, said Partha Pratim Roy, ADRM, NJP.
