Special tracks will be laid for a journey from Delhi to Howrah in 12 hours, Railways Minister Piyush Goyal said in a major announcement on Friday. Trains would run at speed of 160 kmph on this track. The 1,525-km long Delhi-Howrah Route passes through five states, namely Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal.

On average, a train journey from Delhi to Howrah (Delhi-Kolkata) takes anything between 18 to 20 hours. Railways minister announcement will give a huge boost to commuters plying on this route. Piyush Goyal made the big announcement through a tweet.

The Indian Railways is working on a mission mode to improve the average speed of trains across the network.

The route will cover the biggest stretch of 53 per cent across NCR, between Ghaziabad and Pt Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction on Allahabad division.

The travel time between New Delhi and Howrah too will cut down by five hours, now making it a fully overnight journey.

The nod to Indian Railways ambitious project of 160 kmph train journeys on Delhi-Howrah route was given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA).

Earlier in August 13, The Indian Railways has indigenously designed and manufactured a high-speed locomotive achieving a top speed of 180 kmph, which will help in improving the efficiency of high-speed trains like Rajdhani in the country.

The locomotive has been developed by Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW) in West Bengal.

This comes in line with the government’s target to improve the speed of high –speed trains in the country on important routes.

As part of Mission Raftaar, the national transporter is looking to increase the average speed of trains across its entire network, resulting in faster movement of passenger and freight traffic.
