Oscar 2026 Nominations Highlights: Homebound exits race, Sinners dominates with 16 nods

Sinners has emerged as the biggest contender at the Oscars 2026, setting a new record by earning 16 nominations across 24 categories. This makes it the most nominated film of the year.

A major talking point emerged as Sinners set a new Oscars record this year by securing 16 nominations, making it the most nominated film of the ceremony so far.

Close behind is One Battle After Another with 13 nominations, while Marty Supreme, Frankenstein, Sentimental Value, and Hamnet have also picked up multiple nods across various categories.

Homebound’s Oscar journey ends. Producer Karan Johar shared a message for filmmaker Neeraj Ghaywan.

The nominees for Writing (Adapted Screenplay) have also been announced, recognising films that successfully reworked existing material for the screen. The category includes Bugonia, with a screenplay by Will Tracy; Frankenstein, written for the screen by Guillermo del Toro; Hamnet, with a screenplay by Chloé Zhao and Maggie O’Farrell; One Battle After Another, written by Paul Thomas Anderson; and Train Dreams, with a screenplay by Clint Bentley and Greg Kwedar.

The Academy has revealed the nominees for Best Visual Effects at the Oscars 2026. This year’s contenders include Avatar: Fire and Ash, F1, Jurassic World Rebirth, The Lost Bus, and Sinners.

The nominees for Best Sound have also been announced. The shortlisted titles are F1, Frankenstein, One Battle After Another, Sinners, and Sirat.

The Academy has unveiled the nominees for Best Production Design at Oscars 2026. This year’s contenders are Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, and Sinners.

The nominees for Best Original Song have also been announced, featuring a mix of solo compositions and collaborative works from across genres and films. The shortlisted songs are Dear Me from Diane Warren: Relentless, Golden from KPop Demon Hunters, I Lied to You from Sinners, Sweet Dreams of Joy from Viva Verdi!, and Train Dreams from Train Dreams, as the Oscars 2026 nominations continue LIVE.

The Academy has revealed the nominees in the Documentary Short Film category at the Oscars 2026. This year’s lineup includes All the Empty Rooms, Armed Only With a Camera: The Life and Death of Brent Renaud, Children No More: ‘We’re and Are Gone’, The Devil Is Busy, and Perfectly a Strangeness.

The films nominated for Best Documentary Feature Film are:

• Cutting through Rocks
• Mr. Nobody against Putin
• The Perfect Neighbor

The nominees for Best Costume Design have also been announced. This year’s nominees are Deborah L. Scott for Avatar: Fire and Ash, Kate Hawley for Frankenstein, Malgosia Turzanska for Hamnet, Miyako Bellizzi for Marty Supreme, and Ruth E. Carter for Sinners.

The Academy has revealed the nominees for Best Cinematography at the Oscars 2026. The nominees include Dan Laustsen for Frankenstein, Darius Khondji for Marty Supreme, Michael Bauman for One Battle After Another, Autumn Durald Arkapaw for Sinners, and Adolpho Veloso for Train Dreams.

This year’s nominees include Nina Gold for Hamnet, Jennifer Venditti for Marty Supreme, Cassandra Kulukundis for One Battle After Another, Gabriel Domingues for The Secret Agent, and Francine Maisler for Sinners.

Nominees for Actor in a Leading Role category were announced, as the Academy revealed the performers competing for one of the evening’s top acting honours. The nominees are:

The nominations for Best Director are in. The category reflects a strong year for both established names and bold storytelling styles.

The nominations for the 98th Academy Awards began with the Actress in a Supporting Role category, marking the official start of the live announcements. The nominees in this category are Elle Fanning for Sentimental Value, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for Sentimental Value, Amy Madigan for Weapons, Wunmi Mosaku for Sinners, and Teyana Taylor for One Battle After Another.

The countdown for Oscars nomination announcement has officially begun.

If Homebound moves ahead and makes it to Oscar nomination, it would become India’s first film since Aamir Khan’s Lagaan to secure a nomination in the Best International Feature Film category, earlier known as Best Foreign Language Film.

Marathi and regional Indian cinema has found a place on the global stage, as filmmaker Subodh Khanolkar’s feature film Dashavatar has officially entered the Oscar contention list ahead of the 98th Academy Awards. The development was confirmed by Khanolkar himself, marking an important moment for the film and for regional Indian cinema.

Each Oscar category will feature five nominees, with the exception of Best Picture, which will have a total of 10 films in contention.

Hours back, The Academy wrote in a post that the nominations have been sealed. "The ballots have been counted. The names are all sealed", the post read.

Fifteen films have officially moved forward to the next round of voting in the International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards, narrowing down a field that initially included submissions from 86 countries and regions across the world. The shortlisted films, listed alphabetically by country or region, include Argentina’s Belén, Brazil’s The Secret Agent, France’s It Was Just an Accident, Germany’s Sound of Falling, and India’s Homebound. Also advancing are Iraq’s The President’s Cake, Japan’s Kokuho, Jordan’s All That’s Left of You, Norway’s Sentimental Value, Palestine’s Palestine 36, South Korea’s No Other Choice, Spain’s Sirât, Switzerland’s Late Shift, Taiwan’s Left-Handed Girl, and Tunisia’s The Voice of Hind Rajab. It is left to see which of these films make it to the nominations.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has already announced shortlists in 12 categories for the 98th Academy Awards. They include Animated Short Film, Casting, Cinematography, Documentary Feature Film, Documentary Short Film, International Feature Film, Live Action Short Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, Music (Original Score), Music (Original Song), Sound and Visual Effects. The same was announced on December 16, 2025.

The announcement will be streamed on Oscar.com and Oscar.org, which are the Academy’s official platforms. Audiences can also tune in via Facebook, Oscars YouTube, and Instagram, making the event widely accessible across devices. The nominations will go live at exactly 111 minutes from now (at the time of publishing this post).

Indian viewers can watch the Oscars 2026 nominations live on Thursday at 7:00 pm IST.
