New Delhi: The impossible was turned to possible on Saturday when former Miss India Diana Hayden's daughter was born out of an egg, frozen eight years ago at a Mumbai hospital.
The concept of egg-freezing, deemed impossible until a decade ago, has turned out to be a medical marvel. Arya Hayden, the daughter of the 42-year-old actress and husband Collin Dick, was born on January 9.
Paediatrician Dr Bhupendra Avasthi of the Surya hospital in suburban Santacruz said that both mother and the baby were doing fine. Normally, the average weight and length of a new born in India is 2.6 kg and 48 cm, but Hayden's daughter weighed 3.7 kg and was 55 cm at the time of birth, Avasthi said.
"A career woman need not think about her biological clock and get pressurized into getting married earlier than she wants to or have a baby when she isn't ready," the proud mother told a leading daily.
Speaking on why she took such a step, Hayden revealed, “I froze my eggs for two reasons: I was busy with my career at that time and, more important, I was very clear that I was going to wait to fall in love and marry before having a baby.”
The successful delivery of Arya just may pave the way for women who are willing to go for motherhood in their late 30s or early 40s, the doctors said. Gynaecologist Nandita Palshetkar, who froze Diana's egg eight years ago in her clinic facility, claimed it is for the first time that a delivery through the egg-freezing method has taken place at the age of 42, which is normally recommendable at the age upto 35.
Explaining the technology of egg-freezing, Palshetkar said she along with her partner, Dr Hrishikesh Pai brought this technology to India and it is called vitrification technology. Using the technology, they froze 16 eggs of Hayden between October 2007 and March 2008.
