Movie review: Aiyyaa is not Rani's best film

New DeIhi, Oct 12: Ever heard of a woman smitten by a male because of his body odour? If you want to suspend your beliefs, step in and watch Rani Mukherjee's latest flick Aiyyaa.In recent times we have witnessed slapstick humour in flicks like Bol Bachchan, the epic drama “Gangs of Wasseypur”, the adult comedy “Kya Super Kool Hain Hum”, and these films have changed the audience's perception toward comedy flicks. Filmgoers are now mature enough to demand more sensible content and they want to watch better comedy. Rani Mukherjee tries her best to make people giggle in “Aiyyaa”, but she may not come out with flying colours.The film is about a completely filmy, melodramatic, Marathi Mulgi (girl) Meenakshi played by Rani who works as a librarian in a college. She is a fan of Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla and tries to imitate their style at home. Meenakshi's family, based in Pune, is looking for a handsome Mulga (boy) for their dughter and this is followed by a sequence of funny flashes as how this family tries to woo other families approaching for a suitable bride. Meenakshi's over-enthusiastic, melodramatic mother advertises her daughter's skills in the matrimonials columns and overrates her. Their search for a groom finally ends in the name of Madhav played by Subodh Bhave. Meenakshi always had a dream to marry a tall, dark and handsome man. But when her family ended up with a suitable groom, the Marathi Mulgi falls head over heels in love to a South Indian, Surya Iyer, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran, an art gold medalist, student in her college and a painter by profession. But it's not the love at the first sight, the lady is fatally attracted towards Iyer's Body Odor and she blindly follows him through it. But it's not an easy ending for the duo's love affair. So how will the Tamil boy and Marathi girl end in nuptials, considering Meenakshi's family has already found the groom for their bride. That how the story futher deals with.The story looks all the more melodramatic in the late 80's ishtyle. The daughter overacting on any minor issue and is over excited with her marriage, and her mother trying to overrate and overreact in front of the guests coming to have a look at her daughter.The family itself is no ordinary. Brother is a street dog lover, farther is too passive in nature, a loving granny is on a wheel chair with a gold plated teeth. Almost a highly Caricaturish folks which will surely irritate you. Director Sachin Kundalkar though starts on a good note but fails to hit the right chord and leaves many questions unanswered..What to look out for is Rani's performance. She was last witnessed in “No one Killed Jessica” in 2011as a totally bindaas media lady with guts to fight against the system. Though “Aiyaa” is not the best choice to keep her audience on tenterhooks for a long time, yet her performance deserves a watch. Her act as a desperate woman seeking her love through the lover's fragrance may bring a wry smile on your face. But being a Marathi lady in the flick and still not comfortable with the accent may definitely irritate you. Her belly performance looks decent but for some it may be hard to digest.Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran is convincing as a Tamil hunk and has a lot to display- his muscles and abs. He never looks hesistant with hindi dialogue, though doesn't have too much to speak.The flick's sound track and background score has a retro feel with a southern touch, mostly revealed in Dreamum wakeupum, while “Aga Bai” looks sensuous. But you won't remember any of these tracks once you exit from multiplexes.I will go with 2.5 out of 5 stars for Rani Mukherjee turning Marathi Mulgi. If you are a big Rani fan, step into cinema but don't expect too much from the flick.
