New Delhi: Filmmaker Omung Kumar’s biopic ‘Sarbjit’ has not kicked off to a great start at the box office. Starring Randeep Hooda in titular role, the film did not even manage to earn Rs 5 crores on the first day and settled for Rs 3.69 crores.

The film, however, performed better in evening and night shows.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted about the collections earlier this morning.

The biopic is about Sarabjit Singh, a farmer from Punjab who unfortunately lands himself in Pakistani prison. After spending over two decades in the prison he succumbed to death after being beaten up by fellow inmates.

‘Sarbjit’ faced less competition from home grown movies as there were major Bollywood releases yesterday. However, Hollywood movie X-Men Apocalypse will affect the collections of ‘Sarbjit’ drastically. One of the biggest franchisees of Hollywood, the superhero film saw 50% occupancy in India and earned Rs 4. 51 crores.

The buzz around last week’s Azhar (13th May) seems to be fading too. The Emraan Hashmi starrer did not witness any major growth over the weekend and has earned Rs 29. 70 crores by end of first week.

‘Sarbjit’ opened to mixed reviews. While Randeep’s performance impressed many, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s portrayal of Dalbir Kaur was touted melodramatic by many. Many critics believed that Ash’s unnecessary yelling hampered the film’s continuity.

Before the film’s release it was being suggested that Ash’s star power might overshadow others in the film, but this did not happen. In fact, it was only Mrs Bachchan’s performance which was misplaced in the film.

Sadly, riding on her star power too did not turn out to be favourable for the biopic.
