The Delhi cabinet, led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, has approved the School Fee Act to regulate fee hikes for all private schools. This decision comes keeping in view of increase fee hike in Delhi and is expected to provide much-needed relief to parents across the capital. Once the act is passed in the Delhi Assembly, it will become law and impose strict regulations on the fee structures of private schools.
What did CM Rekha Gupta say?
While announcing this decision, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said, "There was a panic among children and their parents due to activities being done by school administration. We studied it deeply and took steps in that regard. No previous governments took any steps regarding school fee hikes in Delhi. Since 1973, no provision has been made to address this issue.''
''I am thrilled to share that the Delhi Government has made a historic and courageous decision. The Cabinet has today passed the draft Bill, which will establish comprehensive guidelines and procedures for fees across all 1,677 schools in Delhi, including aided, non-aided, and private institutions. This marks the first time in history that the Delhi Government is drafting such a Bill, which aims to be foolproof", she added.
Until now, there were no definitive rules to fix the fees of private schools in Delhi, nor any legislation to control fee hikes. This decision has brought relief to parents throughout the city, as it aims to put an end to the arbitrary fee increases imposed by private schools.
What is the Delhi School Fee Act?
The Delhi School Fee Act addresses issues like tuition fees, additional charges for specific subjects (e.g., science, music), and the utilisation of funds collected from students. The government has decided to share a complete guideline, procedure for fees for all schools, including aided, non-aided, private, and others, in due course.
