1) Plane tragedies:

This year has been particularly grim for aviation industry.

It all started with mysterious disappearance of MH370 on 8th of March, the plane had  239 passengers on board .

In July, Malaysian airlines observed another tragedy when It's Flight 17 was shot down over eastern Ukraine killing all 298 people.

 Apart from these, there were other plane tragedies in Taiwan and Mali and unfortunately the year has ended on a sad note with AirAsia airbus falling down in Java Sea killing another 162 people.

2) Sports:

In one of the major world sport event, Germany destroyed Brazil to win FIFA 2014 world cup.
Cricket also observed some ups and downs this year.

The biggest news was the unfortunate death of Australian player Phil Hughes; he went into coma after being hit by a bouncer on his head and later succumbed to his injury.
With MS Dhoni calling it a day in test cricket, another era in world cricket came to an end.

Sachin Tendulkar's much awaited auto-biography, ‘Playing It My Way' was published and like his extraordinary cricketing career, the book also broke all selling records.
Rohit Sharma made history by scoring 264 runs in one innings, highest ever in one day format of the game.

3) Terror:

This year, terror showed its uglier face particularly in Middle East (Iraq, Syria) where ISIS unleashed their reign of terror by killing thousands of innocent people and the end was even grimmer when 6 Talibani terrorists barged in to a school in Peshawar and brutally massacred 146 people, most of them children (132).

4) World:

2014 observed Ebola, a disease gradually turned into an epidemic with countries like Sierra Leone, Liberia severely affected by it.

 Ebola has not only claimed more than 7894 deaths but also devastated the affected countries' economies.

Eruption of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, China was another major event of the year.

Malala Yousufzai and Kailsh Satyarthi sharing Nobel peace prize also sent a positive message to the Indian sub-continent.
US warming up to Cuba was another major event of the year.
Withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan by United States was one another highlighting point of the current year.

5) Entertainment: 

Salman and Shahrukh's much talked about patch-up in Arpita Khan's wedding was the biggest entertainment news of the year.
 The duo also shared stage in  21st anniversary of Aap Ki Adalat.

While in Hollywood, death of Robin Willaims and Philip Seymour Hoffman shocked the fans all across the world.

Kim Kardashian's famous internet break and nude photographs of famous celebs going viral on internet were other promonent events of the year.


6) Politics:

This year witnessed an unpredented rise of Narendra Modi, he successfully led NDA to a comfortable majority in parliament.

BJP has also achieved phenomenal success in state elections.

Also, old Janata party allies SP, RJD, JD (U) joined hands to fight their common enemy BJP.


7) Corruption:

Saradha scam sent flutters to the door of West Bengal Govt., With TMC's MP and MLAs being arrested for their alleged involvement in the scam,

 it has also tarnished the clean image of Mamata Banergee.

Arrest of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalitha in disproportionate assets case was another major event of the year.

Vadra-DLF tainted land deals also kept the media busy.


8) Crime:

This year again was unsafe for women. Cases of rape and abduction came from both cities and villages.

 While Uber taxi rape case ashamed Delhi , Baduan sisters gang rape established that not even villages are safe in India.

There has been a sharp increase in cyber crime also with Sony hack scandal hogging the limlight

9) Space:

In its maiden mars mission, India successfully put a probe in orbit around the planet.

 In November, ESA's spacecraft Philae touching down on the comet which it was following for a decade was another major event for space aficionados

10)  Gadgets: 

This year was particularly interesting for Gadget freaks also.

With the arrival of new Gadgets esp. launch of  iPhone6/6 plus, Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Nexus 6 and 9, Xiomi MI3 kept the tech savvy folks busy.
