New Delhi: Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has launched the new Redmi 2 smartphone in India. The device is priced at Rs 6,999 and is available through e-commerce website Flipkart. Registrations will begin today at 6PM and the phone will go on sale on March 24. For the first round the company is offering around 30,000 – 40,0000 units of the Redmi 2.

The Redmi 2 comes with two 4G SIMs supporting dual-SIM configuration. For India, it supports both 4G LTE network with Band 3 and Band 40 on both the SIM slots.

Slightly slimmer than its predecessor, the smartphone comes with a 4.7 inch HD IPS display at 1280 x 720 pixel resolution (with 312ppi) and has Corning Gorilla Glass 2 for its protection. The device offers a matte touch backcover, along with fingerprint and grease resistance.

The phone is powered by a 64-bit 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor paired with 1GB of RAM and Adreno 306 GPU. It comes with USB OTG and runs on Xiaomi's own MIUI 6 skin over Android 4.4 KitKat.

It has an 8MP rear camera along with a 2MP front-facing camera. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS besides 4G LTE (TDD/FDD) network support. It will be available in pink, yellow, green, grey and white colour variants.

The device is fueled by a 2200 mAh battery and features MEMs microphones for better voice calling quality.

The device, which was launched at CES this year makes sense for the company as they have discontinued the Redmi 1s, leaving it with no entry-level smartphone to compete with the new Moto E.
