Goa Polls 2022: Although the BJP has said that options for Utpal Parrikar are being discussed, he has expressed desire to contest from the Panaji seat.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant will contest from Sanquelim. The party has denied ticket to late CM and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar's son Utpal Parrikar.

The central government has renamed Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA), a government think tank, as Manohar Parrikar Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses in order to "honour the commitment and legacy" of the late defence minister.

Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has instead chosen to award the assembly ticket to Parrikar's aide Siddharth Kuncalienkar.

The announcement of the bypoll for the Panaji seat on May 19 by the Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday, comes at a time when there is speculation about the former Defence Minister's son, Utpal, taking over the political mantle of his father.

The bypoll would be held along with that of five other Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.  Parrikar died on March 17 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Late Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's sons Utpal Parrikar and Abhijat Parrikar have said that they would "honour his (Parrikar's) life by continuing his legacy of service and dedication to the State and the Nation".  

The Goa government has ordered an inquiry into reports that a "purification ritual" was conducted on Saturday at the state-run Kala Academy here, where the body of former chief minister Manohar Parrikar was kept.

Manohar Parrikar was BJP's tallest leader having even occupied the post of the Defence Minister of India, a rare feat for a Goan politician.
