Wimbledon 2017: Angelique Kerber, Garbine Muguruza advance; David Ferrer beats Gasquet

World No.1 Angelique Kerber advanced to the second round at Wimbledon defeating American Irina Falconi 6-4, 6-4; Muguruza passes Alexandrova's test.

German tennis ace Angelique Kerber advanced to the second round at Wimbledon defeating American Irina Falconi 6-4, 6-4 on Tuesday. Kerber, World No.1, needed one hour and 27 minutes to beat the 27-year-old Falconi. The 2016 Wimbledon finalist's serve was broken once in each set, but four breaks were all the double Grand Slam champion needed to seal the win.

Kerber is set to play against Belgian Kirsten Flipkens who defeated Japanese Misaki Doi 6-4, 6-3.

On the other hand, Spain's Garbiñe Muguruza, the 2015 Wimbledon finalist, passed into the second round by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-4.

The Caracas-born Muguruza is set to play against the winner of the match between Belgian Yanina Wickmayer and Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine.

Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, seeded no. 16, passed into the second round also as she got the better of Australian Anastasia Rodionova 3-6, 7-6(6), 9-7.

In Men's Singles, Spanish tennis player David Ferrer advanced to the second round of Wimbledon, defeating Richard Gasquet.

The 35-year-old Spaniard clinched a 6-3, 6-5, 5-7, 6-2 victory over the Frenchman in two hours and 54 minutes, reports Efe.

Ferrer, World No.39 is unseeded at Wimbledon this year, the first time this has happened since the Australian Open 2005.

In the second round, Ferrer is set to play against Belgian Steve Darcis, who defeated Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 in three hours and five minutes.
