Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Australian Open history, beating six-time champion Novak Djokovic in a second-round five-setter.

The world number 117 defeated Djokovic 7-6 (10/8), 5-7, 2-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4 in just under five hours on Rod Laver Arena.

World No. 2 Djokovic, who has won five of the past six title in Melbourne, struggled to find his radar, hitting 72 unforced errors and nine double faults while Istomin belted 63 winners in the match of his life.

This is Djokovic’s earliest exit from the Australian Open since 2006 and it came at the hands of Denis who had never beaten anyone ranked higher than 26 at the tournament.

Djokovic's loss opens the door for world No. 1 Andy Murray, who has lost five Australian Open finals.

"First of all I feel sorry for Novak. I was playing so good today," Istomin said on court.

"I mean, I surprised myself also today. I want to thank my team ... who do a good job. Amazing. So much emotion on my mind so I cannot hold it you know but I want to say thanks very much for coming to support me."

The wildcard, who hit 63 winners, edged the first set but simply refused to fold when second seed Djokovic hit back to win the second and third sets.
