Karachi: Pakistani police has arrested a man in connection with the road rage incident in which an unidentified person opened fire at cricket legend Wasim Akram. “The police have detained one suspect after raid on his home in Quaidabad's Daud Chowrangi locality,” DIG Karachi-East Zone Munir Ahmed Shaikh was quoted as saying by Dawn News.

He said the arrested suspect is the driver of the vehicle which hit the legendary cricketer's car on the busy road of Karsaz area here on Wednesday that resulted in an exchange of words and the reported shooting. The shooting incident took place after the minor accident when the shooter's car hit Akram's Mercedes.

When the former left-arm pacer asked the driver to pull over, a heated discussion took place and after stepping out of his vehicle, the man sitting at the back of the car opened fire.

The 49-year-old Akram, one of the best left-arm fast bowlers ever to play the game, was on his way to the National Stadium where he was to conduct a training camp for young fast bowlers.

Akram escaped unhurt and the shooter fled the scene as a crowd began to gather.

In his initial probe, the arrested suspect told investigators that after the accident, a short exchange of heated words took place, followed by the gunshot fired at Akram's vehicle. The DIG East said that the main suspect who opened fire has been identified and would be arrested soon.

Akram is continuing with his training camp for young fast bowlers. “Wasim Akram is in trauma but all right. He is staying in Karachi and will continue supervising the camp for fast bowlers at the National Stadium,” a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesperson said.
