Wellington: New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum won the toss and chose to bowl in Saturday's first one-day game against Pakistan at Westpac Stadium.

McCullum returned to the New Zealand lineup after being rested for Thursday's game against Sri Lanka, which New Zealand lost by 34 runs while winning the series 4-2.

Kane Williamson, who was New Zealand's top-scorer in that match, is out due to shoulder soreness. Nathan McCullum returned in place of Daniel Vettori, Adam Milne — who has recovered from a side strain — replaced Tim Southee and Trent Boult returned for Mitchell McClenaghan.

Pakistan named a powerful lineup for the first of two matches against New Zealand, including tall paceman Mohammad Irfan.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq said his team felt well prepared after two one-day warm-up matches in New Zealand conditions. It will also play two warm-up matches in Australia ahead of the World Cup.

"We've had two games so a good chance for us to get used to the conditions and we're ready for this game," he said.

"Sometimes it's good before a major tournament that you're not burned out, you're ready and you're fresh."

New Zealand: Brendon McCullum (captain), Martin Guptill, Tom Latham, Ross Taylor, Grant Elliott, Corey Anderson, Luke Ronchi, Nathan McCullum, Kyle Mills, Trent Boult, Adam Milne.

Pakistan: Mohammad Hafeez, Ahmed Shehzad, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq (captain), Haris Sohail, Umar Akmal, Safraz Ahmed, Shahid Afridi, Bilawal Bhatti, Ehsan Adil, Mohammad Irfan.
