London:   Kane Williamson scrapped for runs after making his 10th test century to spearhead New Zealand to 507-8 and a first-innings lead over England of 118 at tea on the third day of the first cricket test at Lord's on Saturday.

Williamson, who came into the match just before tea on Friday, was seventh man out 24 hours later for 132.

At the crease were wicketkeeper BJ Watling on 47, and fast bowler Matt Henry on 8.

New Zealand started the day 86 runs behind with eight wickets in hand, and hoping to bat only once. The Kiwis may yet do that, but they were undermined by conditions favoring the bowlers, who performed well.

After taking only two wickets on Friday, England grabbed two before lunch, and four in the second session, for which the start was delayed for an hour by rain.

Allrounder Corey Anderson lasted only a quarter of an hour after lunch, gloving a ball down the leg side and getting caught behind off fast bowler Mark Wood for 9.

Williamson, who seemed to have more lives than a cat, was finally dismissed by spinner Moeen Ali, who was touching the second new ball for the first time after nearly 40 overs. Williamson was caught by Gary Ballance at backward short leg, after 262 balls.

Ali took out Mark Craig lbw in the same over without scoring, and New Zealand was at 470-7.

Tim Southee scored 11 until he failed to get underneath a short ball and it looped straight to Wood at midwicket, giving James Anderson his first wicket in the match, in his 29th over.

He almost had a second wicket in his next over, when Watling gloved a short ball that Joe Root appeared to catch at gully, but video showed the ball bounced.

In the morning, there were three overs left before the new ball, and Williamson and Ross Taylor used them to quickly reach milestones. Williamson got to his century, and Taylor to his 50, ensuring the top four New Zealand batsmen scored 50-plus scores in an innings for the first time in 50 years.

Taylor fell to an edge off Broad for 62, and captain Brendon McCullum livened up Lord's with a quickfire 42 before giving England debutant Wood his first test wicket.
