PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa:  Bowler Dale Steyn ripped the heart out of Australia's batting in the late afternoon and part-time spinner Dean Elgar took the final wicket in the day's final over to give South Africa a 231-run victory in the second test on Sunday.

Steyn removed Michael Clarke and Steve Smith in successive deliveries and smashed over Brad Haddin's middle stump.

But as the game went past 6 p.m., Chris Rogers was run out by a direct hit for 107 when he looked like taking Australia to the last day.

Nathan Lyon was lbw to Elgar with two balls left.

The Australians had threatened to survive until Monday, when rain might have come to the rescue for them.

Steyn removed the weather equation with 4-55 as Australia was bowled out for 216 facing a target of 448.

Earlier South Africa set Australia a daunting victory target of 448 in the second test on Sunday after declaring on 270-5 before lunch on the fourth day.

Hashim Amla made 127 not out in the South African second innings, completing his 21st test century early in the morning as the top-ranked test team continued to control the game in its pursuit of a series-leveling victory at St. George's Park.

Australia was 31-0 at lunch with Chris Rogers striking three fours and looking good in the 30 minutes the Australians batted at the end of the session.
