New Delhi: One of the richest and influential families of Pakistan, the Sharif family has been an active participant in the polity of Pakistan since long.

Nawaz Sharif is has become the Prime Minister of Pakistan for third time and his brother Shahbaz Sharif will once again take over the reins of power in Punjab.

A steel tycoon cum politician, Sharif has made an astounding comeback after being toppled in a 1999 coup by the then Army Chief Gen Pervez Musharraf. Nawaz was jailed and exiled and he  spent seven years in wilderness.

Nawaz Sharif who has already served two times as the Prime Minister of Pakistan, is all set to form govt  in Pakistan for the third time.





Nawaz was a close associate of Gen Zia-ul-Haque and it was under his patronage that he first became finance minister of Punjab.

In 1985, he became the chief minister of Punjab. In 1988, after Benazir Bhutto’s election as the President, Sharif took over as the leader of opposition.

Consequently, after two years, when Benazir was dismissed from her post over corruption charges, Nawaz Sharif became the Prime Minister in 1990.





He focused on giving the country a better infrastructure and digital telecommunication. Sharif also believed in privatization of government-run institutions like banks etc.

Married to Begum Kalsoom Nawaz, Sharif has three kids, two sons Hassan and Hussain Nawaz and one daughter Maryam Nawaz.

Married to the 12th and two consecutive times Prime Minister of Pakistan, Begum Kalsoom Nawaz became the First Lady of Pakistan.

Kalsoom  not just attained her education from premier institutes of the country but also hailed from an influential background.


Initially reluctant towards politics, Kalsoom believed in working towards the betterment of women of Pakistan.

But all this came to an end when Army chief General Parvez Musharraf ordered to overthrow Nawaz Sharif and his government. Kalsoom was also arrested by female members of army. She was later sent to her residence and Nawaz Sharif was shifted to Adiala jail.

Kalsoom stood for her husband and strongly criticized Pakistani military chief General Musharraf.

She later became the president of Sharif’s party, PML-N.


The daughter of Nawaz Sharif and Begum Kasloom Nawaz, Marayam has been a prominent figure of her father’s political party, PML-N.

Often referred as the new face of PML-N, Maryam is looked upon as the political heir of Sharif family. She has been very articulate on political and socio-economic issues and has been assisting  her father in party related work.

As the Chief Minister of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif introduced major developments in the state is known for his reforms.

He is the brother of Nawaz Sharif and held the position of chief minister of Punjab twice. After Nawaz Sharif’s government was overthrown by military, Shahbaz was also sent to exile in Saudi Arabia.


In 2007, Shahbaz returned following Supreme Court’s orders and was elected as the chief minister of Punjab province for the second time in 2008.

Shahbaz was removed from his position the very next year after Supreme Court declared him ineligible for elections. In the same year, the Supreme Court changed its earlier decision and Shahbaz retuned to his position.


Shahbaz introduced many projects in the state like Lahore Metro Bus System, The Ashiana Housing Schemes and many more.
