New Delhi: Delhi BJP today requested Lt Governor Najeeb Jung to notify arterial roads across the national capital with reserved lanes for movement of emergency vehicles, similar to the ones during the 2010 Commonwealth Games here.

“Disaster Management lanes should be notified on all the 70 main roads marked by the Disaster Management Authority,” Delhi BJP Unit President Satish Upadhyay said here.  He said there was great pressure of traffic on the roads of Delhi and it had often being seen that even ambulance, fire tenders and PCR vans were stuck in traffic jam.  “Many times ambulances are unable to pass through the traffic and the patient dies before reaching hospital,” the BJP leader said in a statement.

As per a report on “Delhi every year 20-25 new born children die because the ambulances did not reach the hospitals on time and pregnant women delivered in the ambulance where there was no facility for the care of new born”, it said.

Similarly, in the case of incidents of fire or collapse of buildings, the fire tender and ambulance are stuck in the traffic and small incidents turn into big tragedy, it added.

Upadhyay said that during the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, lanes were dedicated for the sportsmen and sports managers.  “Similarly, Delhi Government should notify dedicated lanes for use of vehicles during emergency and the people should be made aware of it,” he said.
