Dehradun: Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav today regretted separation of Uttarakhand from Uttar Pradesh saying the picture would have been different if it was still part of his state.

Noting that he had grandiose plans for areas which later came to be known as Uttarakhand and had even made special budgetry provisions for them during his tenure, Singh said things would have been different if it was still part of Uttar Pradesh.

Uttarakhand was created out of UP in 2000.  The SP chief, who spoke briefly to reporters on the sidelines of a private function here, also appreciated efforts being made by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar to create a third front consisting of non-Congress and non-BJP forces.

“We have been scattered for many years. It is for the first time in 20-25 years that there has been an effort to bring us (non-Congress and non-BJP forces) together.  “Nitish Kumar has done a commendable job,” he said.
