Morbi (Gujarat), Apr 18: In a veiled attack on Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi today said that "criticising leader like Anna Hazare is improper and an insult to him."

Modi, without naming Rahul, said "working for people's right is our duty and Hazare is not trying to become a hero by launching such a campaign.

Congress General Ssecretary Rahul Gandhi in a letter to Justice Krishna Iyer had said, "I am trying to end corruption but I have no interest in becoming a hero".

The Gandhian had gone on a hunger strike to press for a stronger anti-corruption bill and forced the government to form a joint committee to formulate a legislation.

After laying the foundation stone of a branch canal of Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNL) at Morbi, Modi said "Anna Hazare has been fighting for peoples' right and some people are targeting him for praising Gujarat over development.

Accusing the Centre of 'putting spanner' in "development" work being carried out by his government,Modi said, "the state government is committed to completing various projects despite non-cooperation from the Union government.

"Gujarat does not receive any benefits like other states and the Union government is creating hurdles in completion of numerous projects," he said.

Accusing the Centre of obduracy, Modi said that SSNL had sought permission from Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh for erecting gates at the Narmada dam but the PM did not grant it.

He claimed that Gujarat is the only state in the country to have achieved ten per cent growth rate in agriculture department. PTI
