New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Salman Khurshid termed Modi's election from Varanasi parliamentary seat as morally invalid following alleged reports that the Election Commission recovered over 3 lakh fake voters in the city.

"The recovery of fake voters was made during an investigation by the district administration. Modi's election from Varanasi is morally invalid, but at this point of time, I can not say it is legally invalid," Khurshid told an English newspaper.

He added, “It is sad, that a person, who has been elected from a seat with so many fake voters, proudly says that he is the Prime Minister of India."

Targeting AAP Chief Arvind Kejriwal and PM Modi, he said, “Modi and all other candidates from Varanasi parliamentary seat including AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal will have to answer.”

Asked if Congress will challenge the election of Narendra Modi on this ground (of fake voters), Khurshid said: "I do not know if the party has taken any decision on the issue yet or not. It is a matter of public interest and anyone, connected to Varanasi, can move the court on this issue."

"The Election Commission perhaps does not have the legal right to cancel the election now. I do not know whether we can today say it legally invalid or not. An election has to be challenged within a given time frame of 90 days. The right to challenge the election seizes after 90 days,” Khurshid reasoned.
