Kolkata: BJP today accused the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government of encouraging terrorism and fundamentalism instead of cooperating in the fight against it.

“The Mamata Banerjee government is giving encouragement to terrorism and indulging with fundamentalist forces. In fact there is evidence on how the JMB terror module is spreading here. Instead of cooperating in fighting it, the state government is indulging in votebank politics,” party's national spokesperson M J Akbar said on the sidelines of a programme here.

Asked about the Teesta water sharing treaty, he said, “There should be some progress but much depends on what happens in the immediate future. The meetings between Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and (Bangladesh Premier) Sheikh Hasina in New York and SAARC have added a positive dimension to the bilateral relationship,” said Akbar.

Banerjee had expressed her opposition to the agreement in 2012, saying it was not in the interest of West Bengal.

On whether BJP would be able to take Banerjee on board, Akbar said, “It is very difficult to find anything rational in Mamata Banerjee's attitude to national and international problems.

“If she stops pursuing vote bank politics it would be better for entire region,” he added.
