New Delhi: A group of lawyers today burnt the effigy of former IPS officer Kiran Bedi, opposing BJP's decision to nominate her as its chief ministerial candidate for the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls.

The advocates raised slogans against Bedi and burnt her in effigy at Tis Hazari District Courts complex, in protest against the clamp down by police force on lawyers in Tis Hazari Court in 1988 when Bedi was the DCP (North).

Advocate Sanjeev Nasiar, President of Tis Hazari Court Bar Association, said Bedi should make her stand clear on the 1988 incident and the lawyers will, thereafter, decide their future course of action.

“Bedi should made it clear as to whether she regrets ordering policemen to lathi-charge on lawyers in Tis Hazari 27 years ago or she still feels it was a right decision,” he said.

Nasiar, who is also the convener of the coordination committee of all district court bar associations, however, made it clear that the decision to burn an effigy of Bedi and protest was not taken by the committee and it was done by a group of lawyers.

The lawyers said when Bedi was posted as the DCP North here, she did everything to take avenge on advocates of Tis Hazari court who were demanding commission of enquiry against the “brutal” lathi-charge.
