New Delhi: The issue of women safety in national capital is weighing on the minds of northeast Delhi voters, thanks to the rising number of acid attack cases in Seemapuri assembly constituency of this region.

Locals said that women don't step out much in the locality fearing acid attacks.

Suman Sharma, a female resident said that women safety has replaced inflation, corruption as the prime concern of voters.

“Acid attacks are a real threat for women,” she said.

Candidates in the constituency are now aspiring to clinch the seat by vowing to end acid attacks on women and also to implement court's order with CCTV surveillance.

BJP's candidate Karam Vir Chandel from Seemapuri, at an election rally, promised to wipe out the threat.

"Women have come to us and complained about acid attack threats. The Seemapuri area is very unsafe for women and crime against women runs high here. For my constituency, women's safety is the main issue," he was quoted as saying a Time of India report.

It should be noted that the Supreme Court had in 2013 banned over-the-counter sale of acid at retail outlets but attacks continue.

BJP's chief minister candidate Kiran Bedi has also said that ensuring women safety in the capital would be high on the agenda if voted to power.

The elections to 70-member Delhi Assembly will take place on February 7 and the results will be declared on February 10.
