Nagpur:  The Congress has questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on cross border firing by Pakistan which has killed civilians and said that NDA leaders including Modi had severely criticised the UPA government when similar incidents took place earlier.

“Has NDA diplomacy failed to tackle the firing across the border,” former Union Minister and senior Congress leader, Ajay Maken questioned here today.

“Part time defence minister Arun Jaitley and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj are quiet about the issue. Why are they not raising it? Prime Minister Narendra Modi should have called a high-level meeting of the military to discuss the issue. He should have also discussed the issue with major opposition parties across the table,” Maken told reporters.

Ridiculing the defence minister's status, Maken said that when the NDA had a majority, it is surprising that the government did not find anyone suitable for the top job.

Talking about prospects of the Congress during the Maharashtra assembly polls on October 15, Maken said that the party would do extremely well and former Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan would successfully lead the party to victory.

Answering a question, he said that the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is getting closer to the BJP since NCP supremo Sharad Pawar had met Modi before and after Lok Sabha polls.
