New Delhi: The Congress party Tuesday said the results of assembly bypolls in various states were a good signal for it and showed that people were rejecting BJP policies.

Congress spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said the party had done well in Rajasthan and Gujarat though it did not perform as per expectations in Uttar Pradesh.

"The results, we feel, are good indications for the Congress and other parties that have won. These are bad for the BJP and its policies have, in a way, been rejected by the people," he said.

He said the Congress had won three of the four seats in Rajasthan and three of the nine seats in Gujarat.

The Congress had lost all 26 parliamentary seats in Gujarat and all 25 in Rajasthan to the Bharatiya Janata Party in this year's genral elections.

He said that people of Uttar Pradesh had rejected the policies of BJP aimed at "spreading hate".

Ahmed said that Narendra Modi had Tuesday gone to Gujarat for the first time after taking oath as prime minister and would not have found a good political indication in the results.

"This is perhaps the first government which has started facing anti-incumbency within its first 100 days," he said.

He said that by-elections have been held to 54 assembly seats since Modi became prime minister and the BJP now has only 21 seats against the 42 it had earlier.

He said of the results that came Tuesday, BJP won 13 seats while it had 26 seats previously.
